1961 Ford Thunderbird

This is clearly an imitation of the idealized rockets found in movies of the time. Who wouldn't want to drive a rocket sled with a gimmicky swing away steering wheel?

1966 Mercedes Benz 230

I was a little worried when shooting this car, simply because it is so similar to post #1, and I didn't want to repeat myself too closely. Well okay, maybe I did repeat myself. But comparing them, it seems my approach has changed a fair bit, and I'm more pleased with how this one turned out. If you are looking at this on a phone or tablet, check it out a regular desktop too.

Somehow, this car looks like it could as easily have been designed in East Germany. It's that austerity, the subdued shapes. Which makes the chrome look even more impressive. A serious looking car.

1954 DeSoto Firedome

Now the mystery car visible in the previous post.

Those giant chrome molars in the grill! And a miniature secondary maw with it's own little teeth in the bulbous extravagant hood, flanked on either side by those malevolent eyes. A dinosaur on wheels. Then there are the more moderate details -- the peculiarly modest tail lights, the odd shape of the "C" pillar, the deeply recessed front wheels, the great bulge of the rear fender to engulf the wheels. The chrome setting for the door pulls, the little cover for the keyhole (to keep it clear of ice?), plus continuous chrome at the base of the windows. This was the era of moderate fins and imagined stream lining to communicate speed.

Unfortunately could not properly capture the noble portrait of de Soto in the center of the steering wheel.

1977 Cadillac Sedan de Ville

I guess Cadillacs of the 70s just don't have their headlights firmly mounted. Love the vast expanse of the hood, with the large elevated section -- shrunken compared to predecessors but still present, like some inherited glandular condition. And it still has vestigial fins, 15 years after they went out of style.

Nice eroded paint on the hood and grille surround. Turn indicators actually do look elegant, as do the shapes of the wheel wells. Unlike many full sized GM vehicles of the era, the wheels & tires don't look too small for the car.

Another vehicle missing passenger side hubcaps.
